Frequently Asked Questions (ADHD Assessments)
At Clear Path Psychology, we understand that seeking an ADHD assessment can feel like a big decision. You may have lots of questions about the process, what to expect, and how it can help. To make things clearer, we’ve put together answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often.
-
An ADHD assessment is a structured process to explore whether an individual meets the criteria for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It involves interviews, questionnaires, developmental history, and validated assessment tools. The aim is to provide clarity, insight, and recommendations tailored to your needs.
-
We offer ADHD assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. Each assessment is tailored to the individual’s age and circumstances.
-
Yes. Our assessments are carried out in line with NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines. This means we include a comprehensive clinical interview, developmental history, validated tools, and — where appropriate — information from parents, partners, or teachers. This ensures the process is thorough, reliable, and widely recognised.
-
Initial consultation to understand your concerns and background
Questionnaires for you (and others if relevant)
A clinical interview with a qualified psychologist
Use of standardised assessment tools
A detailed written report with findings and recommendations
A feedback session to discuss results and next steps
-
The full process usually takes a maximum of two weeks from the initial consultation to receiving your written report.
-
Yes. Every client receives a comprehensive report with results, diagnostic conclusions (if applicable), and clear recommendations for support and strategies.
-
Yes. Whilst our preference is to meet with people face to face for assessment, we recognise that this isn’t always possible for practical, and other important and understandable reasons.
-
Our ADHD assessments are priced at £600. This fee covers consultations, questionnaires, report writing, and a feedback session.
-
No, you can self-refer. Many clients come to us directly, though we’re also happy to accept referrals from GPs or other professionals if you prefer.
-
Yes. Everything discussed is treated with strict confidentiality. Reports are only shared with others (such as schools, universities, or employers) if you request it.
-
No, we do not prescribe medication. If appropriate, we can provide a referral letter to your GP or a psychiatrist to discuss medical treatment options.
-
Yes. Most GPs accept our diagnostic reports as evidence when considering a referral to an NHS psychiatrist for medication. However, the final decision rests with your GP and local NHS services.
-
Yes. Our reports are detailed and suitable for sharing with schools, universities, and workplaces to help secure support, adjustments, or accommodations.
-
We recommend gathering any relevant information about your history (e.g., school reports, previous assessments, medical records) and asking family members or teachers (if appropriate) to share their observations. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything — we’ll guide you through what’s needed.
-
Not everyone assessed for ADHD meets the diagnostic criteria. If that’s the case, we will highlight any other areas of difficulty identified during the assessment and provide guidance, strategies, and recommendations for support.
-
ADHD is the official term used today. It covers three presentations:
Predominantly inattentive (sometimes called “ADD”)
Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
Combined presentation
We’ll carefully assess which presentation best fits your experiences.
-
Yes. Many people aren’t diagnosed until later in life. Adult assessments look at both your current experiences and your developmental history, as symptoms must have been present in childhood.
-
We don’t just stop at diagnosis. We can provide practical strategies to help you manage ADHD day-to-day, or refer you to other services if needed.
-
Not currently, but we will soon be branching out to also provide autism assessments and therapy services. If you have concerns beyond ADHD, we can discuss the most suitable pathway.
